What is GLB?
GLB is the binary, single-file form of glTF 2.0. It packs a 3D model's geometry, materials, textures and animations into one compact file.
glTF stores a model as a JSON description plus separate files for binary data and textures. GLB wraps all of that into one binary container. That makes it easy to upload, download and share: one file, nothing to lose.
What a GLB can contain
- Meshes (vertices, normals, UVs, vertex colours)
- PBR materials using the metallic-roughness model
- Embedded textures (PNG, JPEG, and WebP or KTX2 through extensions)
- Scene hierarchy, cameras, skins for rigged models, and animations
What opens GLB files
Blender, Godot, three.js, Babylon.js, Windows 3D Viewer, Android's Scene Viewer and most modern game engines (Unity through a glTF package). On the web, Google's <model-viewer> displays one with a single HTML tag. That's how every model in our library is shown.
When to choose GLB
Use GLB for the web, real-time engines, AR on Android, and as a general exchange format. For iPhone AR you also need USDZ. For 3D printing you want STL or 3MF, because printers ignore materials.
