3D models for game development

Generate blockout meshes, background props and placeholder characters in minutes, then spend your modelling time on the assets players actually look at.

Most of what fills a game level is never the focus of the player's attention: crates, bottles, rocks, signs, furniture. Those props still take hours each to model, UV and texture by hand. Generating them, or starting from a generated base, frees an artist's time for hero characters and key locations.

Where generated models fit in a game pipeline

  • Greyboxing and blockout. Describe a building or prop and get a rough mesh at roughly the right size and shape. It doesn't have to be final; it has to let a designer test sightlines and pacing.
  • Background props. Things seen at a distance or in passing are the best fit. A low-poly text-to-3D result often ships as is.
  • Concept to 3D. Feed a concept painting into image to 3D to check its silhouette and proportions in-engine before committing a modeller to it.
  • Game jams. When you have 48 hours, a usable placeholder beats an empty scene.

Budgets: how many triangles is too many?

There is no universal number, but rough bands help. A small background prop on mobile is comfortable under about 5,000 triangles. A desktop prop seen up close can be 20,000 to 50,000. Hero characters on current consoles commonly run far higher. Every model in our free model library lists its triangle count, so you can see what those numbers look like in practice. The electrical boxes set is under 2,500 triangles, while the horse skeleton is over 130,000.

If a generated model is too heavy, decimate it in Blender (the Decimate modifier with the Collapse setting) and bake the lost detail into a normal map. If it's too messy to animate, it needs retopology.

Formats that drop straight into engines

EngineBest formatNotes
Godot 4GLBglTF is Godot's preferred 3D format and imports with materials.
UnityFBX or GLBFBX works out of the box; GLB needs a glTF importer package such as glTFast.
Unreal Engine 5FBX or GLBFBX is standard; glTF imports through Interchange in recent versions.
three.js / Babylon.jsGLBThe native choice on the web.

Read what a GLB file is and how FBX differs if you're choosing between them.

What still needs a human

Generated meshes rarely come with clean edge loops for deformation, and AI-reconstructed textures can contain baked-in lighting. Anything that animates, anything the camera lingers on, and anything that defines your game's look still benefits from an artist's pass. A good split is to generate the long tail and hand-craft the short list. Our guide to cleaning up AI models in Blender covers the usual fixes.
